On the corner of the street that connects Piazza dei Signori to the Duomo you can admire and enter the Loggia del Consiglio (also called Gran Guardia), which in the 15th century was the palace where the city council used to gather. Climb the long staircase, enter the patio with its seven arches and access the upper room, decorated with a series of frescoes depicting legendary episodes of the city's life. Piazza della Frutta and delle Erbe immediately recall their original usefulness, which still exists today: the traditional markets that animate the city every morning and where you can buy fresh fruit or a mid-day snack. The discovery of the city's art continues in the nearby Duomo and Baptistery. If you are a lover of letters, you can pay homage to one of the pillars of Italian literature, Francesco Petrarca, who was a canon of the Duomo and who has an honorary sepulchral monument here. The Baptistery in particular offers a unique experience of art at 360 degrees: at the end of the 14th century Giusto De' Meanabuoi painted every centimeter of the interior walls up to the top of the dome with stories from the Genesis and the Apocalypse. Another symbol square of Padua is the huge elliptical Prato della Valle square, which is not only the largest in the city, but also one of the largest in Europe after the Red Square in Moscow. You can get there easily, always with a pleasant walk through the historic center, the typical shops and especially the ancient arcades that characterize the ancient shopping streets of Padua. Prato della Valle has always had recreational and commercial functions and it will not be difficult for you to find the markets that surround it. The peculiarity of this symbol place of Padua is that it does not have a typical configuration of a square, but it is more like a monumental walk among the 78 statues of characters from the past whose center is the Memmia Island, surrounded by a canal.
