Traveling in Conegliano

Visit Conegliano by train. Conegliano is a beautiful city with a history stretching back thousands of years, in the province of Treviso, that preserves centuries-old traditions. This is a place to spend unforgettable hours and days, and not only because of its strategic position within the Veneto region, but also because of the many fascinating attractions it offers to all those who decide to visit and experience its wonder.

A visit to the town cannot begin without seeing the Castle of San Salvatore, built in the 13th century and restored in 1446. This fortress watches over the city on top of the Colle di Giano (Janus Hill): a truly panoramic point to reach.

Conegliano is a city with many attractions, within the historic centre there are several historical palaces such as Palazzo Sarcinelli, built in the 15th century by Giacomo Sarcinelli and now housing the Museum of Venetian History.

Other interesting palaces are the Monte della Pietà, the Palazzo Montalban Vecchio, Casa Longega and the Palazzo Montalban Nuovo. A visit to the city, however, cannot end without a visit to the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, its origins are uncertain; yet, it has been mentioned as early as the 16th century. Those who find themselves in front of this small but beautiful church will also be able to admire the Neptune Fountain, which was inaugurated when Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria passed through the city.

For those who love gardens and bucolic places, a visit to the former Convent of San Francesco is a must. A complex of buildings that can be admired and that hide a beautiful cloister inside; immediately behind the building is a large garden that was once used by the monks as a vegetable garden and vineyards. Finally, the Jewish cemetery is very impressive. Romanticised in the 19th century, it is a place that absolutely must be visited.

Wandering around a town so full of beauty makes you hungry, there is no denying it, and the Veneto offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a nice lunch and a splendid dinner. It should also not be forgotten that Conegliano is famous for the Prosecco and Wine route (which not only allows you to taste Italian wine production but also to enjoy a fantastic landscape).

The local cuisine has strong Austrian as well as Italian influences and specialities include risotto alla canzassa and risotto flavoured with Barolo and risotto with local saffron. You should also try ossocollo, a traditional cured meat, and Treviso cheeses, which can be accompanied by the bubbles of a Prosecco DOCG from Conegliano.

Traveling in Monza

Visit Monza by train. Monza is a city in Lombardy, the smallest in the region. A real jewel where there is no shortage of green spaces and monuments to visit. The Monza racetrack has hosted the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix every year since 1922 and is one of the key places to visit in the city. The Villa Reale in Monza is a beautiful place. This striking building known throughout Lombardy, where the Empress of Austria, Sissi, lived in her last years, is one of the city's main attractions and has much to offer those visiting by train.

Seeing Monza is convenient and easy, the town is compact and the attractions numerous but not far from each other.

A must-see is the Parco di Monza, which is classified as the largest urban park in Italy and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Commissioned by Napoleon, it hides astonishing natural wonders, ranging from a beautiful rose garden containing over 400 species of roses to centuries-old oaks, passing through evocative groves and the gurgling Lambro river.

Many museums are housed here, such as the mineralogy museum, a velodrome for professional motorcyclists and various sports facilities. The villa is also of considerable historical importance as it was not only commissioned by Maria Theresa of Austria but was occupied by the Germans during World War II and became a headquarters in Italy.

Another formidable point of interest in Monza is Villa Mirabello, a 14th century palace, recognised as one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Lombardy. The original structure was commissioned by Giovanni Visconti and later redesigned by the Sforza family.

In Monza, literature enthusiasts can visit the Church of Santa Margherita and San Maurizi, where the real Monaca di Monza, a famous character in Manzoni's Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed), lived.

Finally, right in the centre of the city stands the Duomo di Monza, of Romanesque origins and today a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral is flanked by two bell towers, one cylindrical and the other octagonal. The octagonal bell tower is 22 metres high, dates back to 1108 and is considered the highest tower in Italy. The apse of the cathedral is a sight to behold with its important works of art painted by Giovanni Paolo Lasino and Giuseppe Meda.

The cathedral is also so important because it houses the Iron Crown, a relic of the Christian and ancient worlds. The kings of Italy were crowned with this crown for centuries and it is said to have been made using the iron from one of the nails from Christ's cross.

For those who feel hungry after crossing Monza's famous bridges over the Lambro river, the city offers many specialities such as ossobuco, gnocchi with gorgonzola and torta sbrisolona.

For those who love to eat, you can try the "crema di asparagi" (asparagus cream) and dress it all up with a fine typical Lombard wine.
