Mini Guide, what to visit in Benevento and Foggia

Traveling to Benevento
Traveling to Foggia
Traveling to Benevento

Located in the inland Apennines of Campania, Benevento is exactly halfway between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. Surrounded by hills and mountains, including the limestone massif of Taburno Camposauro, whose peaks outline the silhouette of a reclining woman known as the "Sleeping Lady of Sannio". With a population of about 58,000 people, Benevento was founded by the native Osco-Samnite populations, who baptized it Maloenton. Later, with Roman domination starting in the 3rd century BC, it first took the name of Maleventum and finally of Beneventum. The city bears in its architectural and urban structure the past marked by the different hands that have managed its fate: from the ancient Sannites, to the Romans, the Lombards, to papal rule and annexation to the Savoy kingdom. In short, Benevento is a city rich in historical traces to chase in its streets. Among the unmissable Roman heritage sites to see, there is the majestic Trainano arch, 15 meters high and dating back to 114 AD, and the Roman Theater built by Emperor Hadrian and expanded by Caracalla: in its final configuration it could host up to more than 10,000 people. We also recommend visiting the Rectors' Rock (also known as "the Castle"): here you can visit both the Tower and the Palatium, built in two different architectural styles, a mirror of the many past dominations. Near the Castle you will find the Church of Santa Sofia and its enchanting cloister, a splendid example of Lombard art and included among the UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2011. Among the compulsory stops, you can't miss the Cathedral of Benevento, where Padre Pio was ordained a priest in 1910. The Cathedral, built in the 8th century, was almost completely destroyed by the Allied bombings of World War II. Naturally, it is not possible to talk about Benevento without mentioning the enogastronomic aspect. In the surrounding countryside, some of the most famous and appreciated wines of the Italian tradition are produced, such as the Falanghina and the Aglianico. But the alcoholic product most often associated with this city is the famous liqueur Strega: its name originates from a local legend in which it is said that witches gathered to celebrate their own Sabbaths just under a big Walnut on the bank of the Sabato river. In Benevento, in addition to the classic Campanian delights such as pizza, minestra maritata and sfogliatelle, you can also taste some excellent local dishes. Among the must-haves, we mention caciocavallo, prosciutto di Pietraroja, ammugliatielli, Cecatielli and handmade Pazzarielli, even better if seasoned with abundant Sannite ragù. What are you waiting for? Get on board and get ready for your journey to discover Benevento. Italo allows you to reach Benevento by High-Speed thanks to the new Torino-Bari route. We offer direct connections from Bari, Foggia, Barletta, Caserta, Rome, Florence, Bologna, Milan, Reggio Emilia and Turin. Discover all the Italo offers and buy...

Traveling to Foggia

Foggia, a city of about 150,000 inhabitants located in the heart of the Tavoliere of Puglia. This area has been inhabited since the Neolithic, as evidenced by archaeological findings, however it presented important problems due to the swampy ground, which forced the inhabitants to fight against malaria for a long time: it will be necessary to wait for the arrival of the Normans to witness the draining of the area and the beginning of the city's rise. The settlement reached its period of maximum splendor during the reign of Frederick II, thanks to the special affection that bound the emperor to the Capitanata, a political division of Puglia from the 13th century which had Foggia as its capital. Under the rule of the Aragonese, the city became the main hub of the so-called "sheep customs", an occurrence that caused the abandonment of the countryside by farmers and the beginning of the decline that culminated in the tragic earthquake of 1731. The reconstruction, slow but inevitable, unfortunately saw another disaster fall upon it: the 1943 Allied bombings, which once again razed it to the ground. But even this time Foggia showed extreme tenacity and rose again from its ashes. This cyclical alternation of destruction and rebuilding gives the city a varied appearance, in which (and under) modern-style buildings can be found the remains of antiquity. The center of Foggia, in which all the main attractions are concentrated, can be entirely visited on foot, crossing the colorful stalls of the Rosati market, observing the rationalist architecture of the fascist-era buildings and strolling in the green of the Karol Wojtyla urban park. In exploring the city, there are certainly some places that cannot be missed, such as the most famous religious architecture of the city: the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed into Heaven (in which the famous Iconavetere, the Madonna of the Seven Veils, is preserved), the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Church of Mary Most Merciful - Church of the Dead, because of its macabre decorations - and the Church of the Crosses, also known as the Chapel of the Crosses. Among the other recommended stops we find the Foggia Civic Museum, rich in exhibits that extend throughout the entire course of the city's long history, and the hypogea, where you can see up close the stratification of the urban plan over the centuries. Of course, a visit to Foggia cannot be considered complete if you do not taste the authentic delicacies of this land. Among the typical dishes of the Capitanata, legumes and pasta stand out in particular, such as orecchiette, cavatielli, ravioli with ricotta, troccoli, pasta made from burnt wheat and wheat of the dead. Among the baked goods we find the classic taralli, the black taralli with vincotto, the scaldatelli, the Indian wheat pizza and the puccia (bread with black olives). For the most gluttonous we recommend tasting, in addition to the fried Christmas cartellate, the typical almond-based products, such as almond pastry desserts and landed almonds. What are you waiting for? Get on board and discover Foggia!
