Animals on board

Small pets

On board Italo you can transport pets – in specific travel containers – such as small dogs, cats and other small pets, provided they weigh under 10 kg.

Mode of transport The animals must be transported in specific containers (“pet baskets”), which – one per traveller– can be stored on board the train in the luggage space or next to your seat.

To transport dogs you must have the registration certificate with you. In the case of travellers from foreign countries, the animals must have the identification system and passport required by EC Reg. no. 998/2003, where applicable. Dangerous or ill pets cannot be transported.

Guide dogs Guide dogs for sight-impaired or blind passengers can travel for free on Italo without any restrictions on size or weight.

Dogs over 10 kilograms

185 mph on four paws. With the support of the Ministry of Health and with a modern and innovative solution, NTV is changing how you can travel with your pets on its trains. Also XXL sized dogs, i.e. those over 10 kgs, can travel on Italo's High Speed Trains. The service was prepared with the participation of the main animal protection agencies, ENPA (National Association for the Protection of Animals), LAV (Anti-Vivisection League), ANMVI (National Association of Italian Veterinary Surgeons) and FNOVI (National Federation of Italian Veterinary Surgeons).

Dogs are allowed to travel on all trains between 10:00 and 16:00, avoiding the morning and evening commuting periods. Thanks to the cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the animal agencies, the initiative has been planned both to avoid stressful situations for the dog owner and the animals, and to enable travellers who do not enjoy the company of large dogs to avoid them, by observing from the carriage plan on the Internet where the XXL dogs are permitted to travel. Dog owners are required to keep their dogs always on the leash, use a rigid or soft muzzle on the dogs when entering and leaving the train (and on request by NTV staff) and must carry their dog's registration certificate.

Booking for the service must be made at least 24 hours before the planned travelling date via the Pronto Italo Contact Center (060708). The price for transporting a dog is set at 30% of the Base or Economy tickets in Smart and Prima (according to availability), and a fixed price of 20 euro for those choosing to travel in a Club Salotto (private compartment).

Reserved space, hygienic kit and rules

Your journey begins with the good owner handbook, a set of regulations and recommendations provided by the Ministry of Health, accompanied by a video explaining how to fit a muzzle to your dog. It also provides a useful map showing veterinary surgeons near the stations served by Italo.

When you board an Italo train, you will find an area reserved for dogs, one in each journey ambience (Smart, Prima and Club Salotto), chosen to offer a comfortable environment for the dogs, their owners, and those who don't enjoy travelling in the company of animals.

On the train the dog owner will be given an "I love dog" bag containing a hygienic mat, made of super-absorbent anti-odour polymers, where your dog can comfortably settle down for the journey.
